When it comes to prepping your used vehicle for winter, the same maintenance that should be taken for new vehicles becomes that much more important. There is a higher probability for a used vehicle to become less reliable during winter months than a newer vehicle, which is why our team at The Car Lot has put together this handy guide to help you get your used vehicle all ready for winter and keep it running through our cold, Canadian winters. Read on to learn how to properly prepare your used vehicle for winter, including what maintenance to do on your battery, tires, windshield wipers, brakes, and fluids so that it’s ready to handle whatever Sudbury, ON, has coming for it during the winter.

Used Vehicle Winter Maintenance Checklist

Like with any vehicle, there are certain components of your used vehicle that you want to check carefully before the snow first falls, and keep an eye on until spring arrives:

  • Battery: Clean the terminals and consider replacement if the battery is over three years old or tests poorly when you check the voltage
  • Tires: Having good tire pressure allows your wheels to get the most traction that they can with icy roads, so check the pressure closely and fill your tires as necessary. If you have winter tires, it’s best to put them on just before the first snow falls as well
  • Windshield Wipers: Refill your washer fluid with freeze-resistant formula and replace any old wipers so you can trust you will always have clear vision even on snowy days
  • Brakes: If your brake pads and rotors have noticeable wear get them replaced, and any fluids in your brake system should also be checked in case it needs changed (should be changed every 40,000 kilometres)
  • Fluids: Along with the brake fluid, also check that your antifreeze levels are appropriate to prevent freezing, and if you prefer, also switch to a winter-grade oil for better viscosity in the cooler months. Transmission fluids should also be checked just to ensure it doesn’t need replacing, which should be done every 50,000 to 100,000 kilometres
